Addarren LaKeith Ross otherwise known as Lil Snupe was born on June 13, 1995 in Jonesboro, Lousiana. When Lil Snupe was around 4 years-old, his father Charlie Brown was incarcerated. His mother Denesha Chester raised Snupe by herself. As Snupe got older he realized that music was really his passion. I can only imagine that he wanted to chase his dream and make it become a reality. No matter how hard he had to work to perfect his craft. Those dreams were about to come true.
In December of 2012, Lil Snupe released his first mixtape “16 & Runnin.” With a mix of his southern drawl along with the precise lyrical art of storytelling, Snupe shared what he went through growing up in Jonesboro. While Meek Mill did a concert in his home state of Louisiana, Snupe managed to hand his mixtape over to him before he left to his next destination. After Meek Mill listened to it for 20 minutes, he called Snupe and signed him to his Dream Chasers label on the spot. Just imagine you woke up one day and said to yourself: “I think I am gonna go check out one of my favorite artists, drop off my demo, and hope to get signed within the same day.” Then what you thought about that day when you woke up actually became reality. So Lil Snupe, at 17 got signed to a major record label deal within 20 minutes. Twenty freaking minutes! That’s big.
The reason Meek Mill signed Lil Snupe was that he was impressed by his original style and lyrical delivery. He said in an interview with MTV:
“He was spittin’ so much pain, he’s from the south with a flow like an east coast guy. Like with that bounce flow, all over the place, he really can spit, and he was talking that talk that I can really relate to. I seen potential in him.”
His southern charm and east coast flow pretty much crushed Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receiver Desean Jackson’s artist Retro (of Jaccpot Entertainment) during a rap battle Meek Mill held after an event in Philly on December 2012 (According to Crossingboard.com). Jackson lost $10,000 betting that Retro can come up the W over Snupe in the rap battle. Eagles quarterback Mike Vick, Grand Hustle’s own T.I. and many others witnessed a star in the making. With Meek Mill’s guidance, Lil Snupe will be a force to be reckoned with in the rap game.
In April of 2013, Snupe released his “R.N.I.C. (Real N***a In Charge)” through Dream Chasers. His track “Melo” became a huge hit along with other tracks on his second mixtape. Curren$y, DJ Khaled, Trae Tha Truth, Twinn U, Tay, Jay Knoxx, Big Poppa, and his mentor Meek Mill made special appearances on the heavily popular mixtape. Meek Mill made him apart of his “Dreams Come True” along with label mates Louie V. Gutta, Lee Mazin, and Jordanne. Seemed like the people had their eyes opened and they ears tuned in to Lil Snupe.
Lil Snupe turned 18 on June 13th of this year. He even tweeted about how blessed he was to see 18. After everything that has happened to him from being signed to Dream Chasers, the rap battle against Retro, countless appearances at radio stations showing his freestyling skills, releasing two mixtapes (one independent and one on a major label), and most importantly reppin his hometown of Jonesboro he was living the dream. But his dream soon faded away in an instant.
On June 20th, 2013 just 7 days after he turned 18, Lil Snupe was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Winnifield that he was visiting. The shooting took place round 4:00am. Now various news sources and social media sites have different stories on the reason of how Lil Snupe got shot. Some say it was over a $100 dice game. Others say it was over a video game bet. Some say he was shot twice in the torso, while others say he was shot twice in the chest. Another story said that he was shot four times. Then a tweet of a photo allegedly showing Lil Snupe’s bloodied body on Twitter was in question as well. Was the picture really him or not? Then some believe his death had to deal with Illumniati. Whatever the case maybe a talented life was lost. A mother and father lost their only child.
The last thing that Lil Snupe tweeted before his death was:
His funeral was held at Jonesboro-Hodge High School in his hometown on June 29th, 2013. Family, fans, and thousands of mourners gathered to celebrate the life of Addarren LaKeith Ross. Snupe’s mentor Meek Mill said according to The Shreveport Times, “I saw something in him. His demo tape spoke to me. I saw myself in him.”
One of the most touching moments of the funeral service was the reading of Snupe’s father (Charlie Brown) letter who was still incarnated. MTV News shared a little bit of what his father wrote in that letter:
“He came from nothing. He taught the young to never make excuses. When the doors open for me, the world will forever hear Lil Snupe!”
Just four days before Lil Snupe was laid to rest, a suspect turned himself in to the Winnifield Police for the murder of the Dream Chaser artist. ABC News reported that 36 year-old, Tony Holden from was arrested. Holden was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A second suspect was arrested in connection with Snupe’s death. On July 3, 2013, 21 year-old Edrick O. Steward was charged with manslaughter in connection with the murder.
Holden failed to post bail which was set for $2 million dollars. Steward had no bail set at the present time. So these are the two individuals who are responsible for the death of Lil Snupe. Of course no one knows what exactly happened in that apartment complex but Holden and Steward. The best thing for them to do is just to confess what happened to give Lil Snupe’s family and friends some closure.
We all have dreams. Dreams help keeps us alive. They help keep us striving for more. To accomplish the impossible. Lil Snupe had a dream that literally became true overnight. For the brief time he lived on this earth, he lived that dream. He made people happy with his music. He impressed even some of the biggest rap stars in the game. Meek Mill stated that he was trying to get Snupe out of the streets, but eventually the streets got him. I honestly feel that the streets loved Lil Snupe. Jonesboro loved Lil Snupe. Now the world loved Lil Snupe. And he loved them right back. It’s a shame that he couldn’t stay around to see his dreams blossom into something big.
