July 13th – July 14th 2013: Sad & Crazy News Day

Saturday July 13th and Sunday July 14th 2013 were a crazy days in the news.  There was a lot going on. It kind of made me think about some things that happened over the past couple weeks. So I decided to share my own insight about these three news stories that took place on this particular day. Don’t worry. I won’t offend you with what I have to say. I hope I don’t.

Zimmerman Verdict Trayvon Martin Murder Case/Stand Your Ground Law

Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman

After the jurors deliberated for like a day and half they found George Zimmerman not guilty with the shooting death of 17 year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida on February 26, 2012. Now you may say, “Ashley why are talking about this?” Everyone has talked about this.” Now I have heard both sides of the case. Those who thought that Zimmerman was without a shadow of a doubt is guilty of shooting Trayvon. Most people who are in support for Trayvon Martin and his family think the verdict of Zimmerman being set free is completely bogus. Trayvon was unarmed with just a can of Arizona Iced Tea and a bag of Skittles. They might have felt that Zimmerman claiming “self-defense” was kind of cowardly. Trayvon was unarmed. Also the fact Zimmerman didn’t testify himself in the trial was kind of sketchy too. The evidence points to him in killing Trayvon. And here is the kicker which I totally agree upon: If the 911 dispatcher told Zimmerman to stay in the car and not pursue in the individual, why in the hell would he get out of your car and pursue the person? I would not pursue someone who I thought looked suspicious or not. That’s just pure common sense.

Then there are those who completely agree that Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin in self-defense. There wasn’t any sufficient evidence to prove that Zimmerman was a murderer. Then the two charges that he was tried for: second-degree murder and manslaughter was pretty much thrown out due to Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law.  The Stand Your Ground law simply states that you have the right to defend yourself without running away from a dangerous situation. And of course Zimmerman showed images of him being injured by Trayvon Martin on the night of that tragic incident occurred. His family even confirmed that it was Zimmerman’s voice crying for help when they played the 911 tape of the call from that night. There are some many other things I can add to this but I will stop right there. So basically they let a killer free because he “stood his ground?” That just sounds fishy to me. But people think Zimmerman’s verdict was the best choice that the jurors made.

They labeled Trayvon as thug, a problem child, a stealer, and a juvenile delinquent.  But what did his parents see? What do Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin see? Parents who have lost a child they both loved dearly. What does Jahvaris Fulton see?  Brother’s bond gone within minutes, only leaving loving memories. People who were on Zimmerman’s side saw only the bad in Trayvon.  And not what  Trayvon’s  parents or his brother or others saw in him.

Did you know there are 30 states including Florida that have the “Stand Your Ground” Law?  So in cases where the law worked for others didn’t work out for some. Did the law worked for Michael Dunn who killed 17 year-old Jordan Davis after an argument at a Florida gas station? The reason why he shot him?  Jordan’s music was too loud in his car.  And the funny thing was Jordan didn’t even have any weapons in his car. Did it work for 76 year-old John Spooner? He shot and killed 13 year-old Darius Simmons in Milwaukee. Why? Mr. Spooner was teaching Darius a lesson about stealing when all he was doing was taking out the trash. Mind you Darius was Mr. Spooner’s next door neighbor. The law didn’t work for him. He was found guilty of Intentional Homicide. Did it work for Marissa Alexander? She was trying to flee from her husband who was trying to abuse her. She picked up a gun and a shot into the wall. They charged her with aggravated assault and sentenced her 20 to life. So Ms. Alexander tried to use the “Stand Your Ground Law” and the jury reached their verdict within 12 minutes of deliberations. What is going on with this world we are living in?

Death is no joke. Losing a life due to something senseless is sad. Of course you can bad mouth people and say they did so many negative things. But at the end of the day, they were a human being. They had families and friends who loved them. I don’t know if people can see the lesson here. It has been stated over and over again. We need to be unified and loving to one another.  To put our differences and opinions aside to help make this world a better place. I know all the problems cannot be solved in a day. But just taking action one day at a time would be a good start.

♥Rest In Heaven Trayvon♥

Cory Monteith’s Death

Cory Moneith

Later on that night, they announced  Corey Monteith, who played the loveable Finn Hudson on Glee, passed away on July 13, 2013. Monteith was found in room in a Vancouver, Canada hotel room.  Apparently the 31 year-old Glee actor died as a result from a mix of heroin and alcohol. CNN reports, Monteith revealed in an interview in Parade Magazine, stating that he begun using drugs when he was 13 years old. When he was 19, he entered into rehab.  In March 2013, Monteith checked into a drug alcohol facility to do another stint of rehab.  His death shocked fans, fellow Glee cast mates, family, and friends. People wonder how Glee can survive without Finn. I know I read an article on CNN.com did about the future of Glee.  It said that they would start production on the show in early August. So the season premiere date for Season 5 will be Thursday, September 26th. I am pretty sure that they are going to do an episode tribute to him. They need to.

You Know What Grinds My Gears

This is pretty much the only one that I kept from the past blog features list. The idea for this blog feature came from Family Guy.  Remember the episode, “Stewie B. Goode” from season four? Peter was at the LackLuster Video Store looking to score some porn to take home and watch. Then the sales clerk told him that they don’t sell porn in anymore. Peter started giving a rant about how the video store stopped selling porn.  The loveable news anchor from Channel 5 News, Tom Tucker who also was trying to score some porn overheard Peter’s awesome rant. Tom liked it so much that he gave Peter a daily news segment called: “You Know Really Grinds My Gears” where he rants about general things that irritate him.  So I decided to rant about things in the news or in general that really irritate me.  It’s kind of like an opportunity to vent out my frustrations in a healthy manner.
